1 Cor 2:1-5; Lk 4:16-30
In today’s Gospel, we read the mission manifesto of Jesus.
Mission statements are popular among organizations today.
The organizations that come out with a mission statement offer a concise explanation of ‘who they are’ and ‘what they look to achieve.’ Having a practical focus, the mission statements act like the moral compass for organizations, constantly reminding them of their purpose and giving them directions to accomplish the stated objectives.
The mission manifesto of Jesus explains his programmatic action plan for proclaiming the Kingdom of God.
How is the mission manifesto of Jesus unique?
1.So far, the Israel prophets have been sent as emissaries of God. Now, it is the Son of God who proclaims the message of the Kingdom.
2. The prophets announced to people what God commanded them to say. Here, we find that God’s promises are fulfilled in Jesus for all.
3. Jesus’ mission manifesto shows that he will build up the Kingdom. But he will also bring down what obstructs the growth and spread of the Kingdom.
4. To give life to his words, Jesus, the Son of God, gives his own life as ransom.
5. Jesus’ mission is inclusive. It was not just for Jews but embraced Gentiles as well.
6. The mission manifesto of Jesus is both spiritual and social.
Following Jesus means embracing his mission manifesto and making it ours.
Let us pray for God’s grace to give life to Jesus’ vision in our times.
