Unprofitable Servants!

Ti 2:1-8,11-14; Lk 17:7-10

Today’s Gospel emphasizes the Christian vocation to be a servant of God and our neighbors.

Servants fulfill their duties without expecting to be thanked or rewarded in return, though justice requires that their works are to be compensated adequately.

Jesus envisions that discipleship should embrace the model of servanthood where the disciples of the Lord voluntarily forego their privileges like their Master.

The twofold duties of the servant, namely plowing or tending sheep, would symbolize toiling in the vineyard of the Lord and leading and guiding God’s people, respectively.

Thus, even with all their good-willed effort and selfless toil, Jesus implies that the servants are not supposed to feel entitled to anything.

By this, Jesus means that graciousness is God’s gift, and even a dutiful servant cannot lay claim to it.

Pope Francis invokes the servant imagery quite often. He said, ‘The measure of our faith is service.’

Accordingly, if not for their loving service, the servants lose their identity as followers of Jesus.

Let us pray that we may serve the Lord with the heart of a humble servant.
