Rom 7: 18-25; Lk 12:54-59
In today’s Gospel, Jesus appeals to the use of God-given wisdom to discern good and evil.
By making reference to their ability to read the clouds and the wind, Jesus wants them to get in touch with the ‘law written in their hearts’ (2:15). That inner law is what we know as the Natural Law which refers to the God-given universal moral order that human reason can grasp.
However, Jesus is pained by their selective application of God-given wisdom. For people who can predict rain and sun, recognizing Jesus, his message, and his mission becomes difficult.
Jesus alerts us to the problem of selective knowing because it stops with the head and is unable to descend to the heart.
In the second part of the Gospel, Jesus talks about coming to terms with the opponent. Extended to life, it is about getting right with God too.
How are we going to straighten things out with God? In other words, what should we do to make our relationship right with God?
If we can get in touch with the inner law, it will guide us to God!
