2 Cor 1:18-22; Mt 5:13-16
Today’s Gospel invites us to put our faith on display.
Jesus makes use of salt and light to describe Christian influence in the world.
Salt flavors the food. That quality is distinctive to salt. The right amount of salt is essential to make the food tasty. However, loss of saltiness results in loss of taste in the food as well. Jesus extends this analogy to Christian life. What makes Christian life distinctive should never be lost and preserved at any cost. The loss of Christian distinctiveness makes Christian witnessing ineffective. If ‘saltiness’ is our worth, we only succeed by preserving it.
The purpose of light is to illuminate. By employing two phrases, ‘City on a Hill’ and ‘Lamp on a Stand,’ Jesus highlights the importance of visibility that should characterize Christian witnessing. Just as good things must not remain hidden, Christian witnessing cannot remain invisible. Instead, it must be put on a proud display as a beacon to guide the world. Jesus believes that Christian goodness contains a missional virtue, and therefore, it has to be ‘announced from the rooftops’ (Lk 12:3).
Let us pray that we may understand the public dimension of our faith and live up to the realization.
