Correction in Love!

Gen 12:1-9; Mt 7:1-5

Today’s Gospel highlights the moral vices of judgement and hypocrisy.

We judge others when we believe we are more righteous than them.

With regard to the sin of judging others, Jesus exposes the human inclination to err from the presumption of moral superiority. Here, we cannot overlook the culture of moral policing that is gradually seeping in among us. How can we win over the temptation to judge others? It is by being reminded of the principle of reciprocity by which we will be measured by the same yardstick that we used to measure others. In his instruction, Jesus calls on us to practice charity in speech and humility in understanding others.

With regard to the sin of hypocrisy, the words of Jesus underline the deceptive nature of sin. It is very unfortunate that we often end up criticizing in others what we generously ignore in ourselves. We are unmindful of how we hold others guilty for the same wrongs we need excuses for. Here, Jesus prompts a self-examination and invites us to hold ourselves accountable before condemning others as sinful. We become morally responsible and sensitive when we find ourselves in others.

By instructing us against judgement and hypocrisy, Jesus wants us to master the art of correcting others in love.

Let us pray for the gift of finding ourselves in others.
