Ex 34:29-35; Mt 13:44-46

Today’s Gospel compares the Kingdom of Heaven to a treasure and a pearl of great price.

Though the passage looks small, it contains profound insights.

We need to take note of three important acts of the agents involved.

Searching: Though we may likely be carried away by the fact that the two individuals are ready to sell everything in order to possess what they both consider precious, what is more important here is that they searched for what they considered valuable and worth buying even if it meant parting with all their wealth. Their genuine search for something higher and nobler is a lesson for us. Do we search with all our hearts to find what we consider most valuable?

Rejoicing: Jesus makes it clear that both individuals rejoiced when their sincere search yielded results. We must note that they rejoiced about buying what they considered precious. In their view, possessing the Kingdom is everything. They knew that they were not losing in mortgaging everything to obtain the Kingdom because they were only trading up. Their decision to ‘lose’ invites us to ask what we are holding onto that we are unwilling to sell for the sake of possessing the Kingdom.

Possessing: This marks the final step of the individuals who not only searched for but also rejoiced about discovering something precious. Though their act of parting with all their wealth to own the Kingdom looks like a commercial loss, they regard it as a joyful exchange. This is why they could sell everything with joy. Because joy becomes the motivating factor, they give up everything to gain the treasure. Compared to the Kingdom, everything else becomes secondary for them. Is the Kingdom our primary focus?

Let us pray that we may find joy in losing everything for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven.
