Deut 6:4-13; Mt 17:14-20
Today’s Gospel highlights the importance of faith that is alive, real, and rooted.
When a desperate father brings his demon-possessed boy to Jesus, revealing that his disciples could not drive out the demon, Jesus is disappointed with his disciples’ lack of faith.
While there is Jesus’ disappointment highlighted, the passage also leads to Jesus’ explanation on the greatness of faith, even the size of a mustard seed.
But how can we understand Jesus’ statement regarding the power of small faith?
When Jesus teaches that faith, even the size of a mustard seed, can move mountains, he wants us to realize that it is the real presence of faith that matters and not its real size.
In his preaching, Jesus also lets us understand that his disciples had a weak faith that lacked trust in God. Sadly, an ineffective faith only betrays our distance from God.
A faith that is alive and rooted can make the impossible happen.
Let us pray for the gift of living faith that can manifest God’s power at work in us.
