Building on Jesus!

2 Kgs 24: 8-17; Mt 7: 21-29

Today’s Gospel highlights Jesus as the foundation of Christian life.

In his parable, Jesus talks of two kinds of builders: the wise builder who builds his house on the rock and the foolish builder who makes sand as his foundation. Between the two, Jesus invites us to follow the example of the wise builder who listens to the words of the Lord and acts on them.

However, what is more important is the fact that the wise builder’s rock refers to Jesus himself. Hence, to build on the rock means to build on Christ. When Jesus becomes the foundation, everything about our lives changes for the better. With Jesus as the rock and foundation, our lives become totally transformed.

We must note that though the foundation is hidden from plain sight, its role in providing stability to the building is enormous. The foundation may remain unseen, but the rock-solid house that withstands life’s storms will reveal ultimately the foundation, who is Jesus himself. Hence, a good life pays tribute to the Lord, who is our foundation.

Thus, the practice of our faith depends on who we have as the foundation of our lives. When we have Jesus as the foundation, we will not be paying mere lip service by saying, ‘Lord, Lord.’ Instead, we will manifest our fidelity by a love that is expressed through obedience to the commands of Jesus.

We stand tall if we build on Jesus. Our life becomes a living testimony if Jesus is our foundation.

Let us pray that, like the wise builder, we may build our lives on Jesus, our Rock and Saviour.
