2 Sm 12:1-7,10-17; Mk 4:35-41

In today’s Gospel, Jesus invites us to have unwavering faith in him.

I came across an insightful story that explains why we should never lose faith.

John was flying back home from his business trip. The two hours turned into two very uncomfortable hours because of the turbulence most of the flight. The pilot apologized for the inconvenience and assured everyone that things would be okay. Still, John noticed that many were clutching their armrests tightly; some of them felt sick, while others were very stressed out, except for one little girl. John watched her as she read her book with no concern at all about the rough flight. John was intrigued by her calmness. When the flight landed, he asked her why she was not afraid during the flight when everyone was fearful. She replied, ‘I knew I would be safe because my dad is the pilot.’

Jesus calls us to have faith because it is God, not us, who is in charge of us.

Jesus is disappointed with his disciples’ behaviour because they show no understanding of who he is despite witnessing the miracles that he has performed.

Moreover, Jesus is with them; he has not abandoned them. His sleep even means that there was some problem with the threatening waves, though the situation did not amount to a real danger as the disciples cried out, ‘We are perishing.’

Not just the absence of faith, but little and shaky faith also points to faithlessness.

Sometimes, we become ever more despairing in the face of little trouble.

The only antidote to our lack of faith is to understand that God is in charge.

Such firm trust will facilitate an increase in faith in us.
