Means Vs. Ends!

Is 58:1-9; Mt 9:14-15

Today’s Gospel highlights the ‘searching doubt’ that is found in John’s disciples.

They are taken aback by the obvious difference that Jesus and his disciples are characterized by and want to understand the truth for themselves.

Hence, though their question is oriented toward seeking clarity over the observance of fasting, Jesus’ explanation wants them to transcend such narrow thinking.

In other words, if the rituals are meant to purify oneself to encounter the Lord, their functions cease when the Lord is with them.

With Jesus being present among them physically, the rituals fade in significance.

Jesus helps them understand that if they have one obligation remaining, it is to honor the Lord, who is now with them.

By his explanation in the Gospel, Jesus helps us understand that the rituals are the ‘means’ to reach our ‘end,’ which is God Himself.

In this Lenten season, let us not be lost in the ‘way’ of rituals so that we steadily move toward reaching our ultimate ‘goal’ – God!
