Hos 14:2-10; Mk 12:28-34
In today’s Gospel, Jesus helps us understand the essence of religion.
He summarizes the Ten Commandments into just two: love of God and love of neighbor.
In the Ten Commandments, we understand the love of God through prescriptions.
Similarly, the love of neighbor is understood through prohibitions.
It is important to see why Jesus praises the scribe who asked this question. Unlike others, he aligns with Jesus’ view that true religion is not obsessed with rituals but authentically social.
The duty of love is placed above the burden of rituals and sacrifices.
Thus, the love of God is just an inversion of the love of neighbor.
Let us live out the religion that Jesus himself practiced!
