Is 65:17-21; Jn 4:43-54

Today’s Gospel gives us another exemplar of faith in the royal official.

He must have been a gentile, but his knowledge of Jesus turns into faith.

He comes from Capernaum to Cana to beg for a favor from Jesus. That is a twenty-mile distance (32 kilometers).

The point is that he would not have made this journey if not for his faith in Jesus.

Jesus may have seen his faith, which made him journey 20 miles.

The royal official seems determined to get help from Jesus, not discouraged by what he says, ‘Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will not believe.’

Above all, all that he takes from Jesus is his word that ‘Your son will live.’

The miracle enables the conversion of his whole household and faith in Jesus.

The royal official proves that for someone with faith, a word from God is enough.

It is like he traveled all that distance to get that word from Jesus, and nothing more.

That word from Jesus heals not only his son but the royal official and the whole of his household.

The royal official invites us to understand the transforming power of God’s Word!
