Acts 4:32-37; Jn 3:7-15
Today’s Gospel highlights Nicodemus’ difficulty understanding Jesus’ explanation about rebirth.
If a man like Nicodemus, who came searching for Jesus, could not understand him, how would others react to his teaching?
This is the reason why Jesus was a sign that was opposed by the religious leaders of the time.
Here, the problem is not that we do not understand. The real problem is if we have the open mind and heart to understand the truth.
Secondly, Jesus talks about the ‘lifting’ of the Son of Man. We understand the lifting up of Jesus in two ways: the lifting on the cross and the lifting into glory with his ascension.
The truth is that the former was necessary for the experience of the latter.
The cross was the way to glory.
The Christian life is the same as well.
It takes discipline to be a Christian, both to understand the Christian Truth and to live out the life-altering truth in real life.
We cannot do this alone. We need God’s grace to discover Christian truth as a life-transforming message and experience.
