Acts 8:26-40; Jn 6:44-51
Today’s Gospel highlights Jesus as the way to the Father and the source of eternal life.
1. Jesus – the Way to Father: Jesus makes it clear that there is no knowledge of God apart from him. Hence, ‘listening to the Father’ or ‘taught by Him’ happens only through Jesus. We do not learn from God apart from hearing and believing in the words of Jesus. It is the faith in Jesus that unites the believer with God the Father. Thus, Jesus shows that he is the way to the Father.
2. Jesus – the Source of Eternal Life: Jesus also reveals that he is the bread that comes down from heaven and the source of eternal life. Jesus’ claim should be contrasted with the death of those Israelites who ate the manna in the desert and still died. Here, the mortality that results from eating the ordinary food is contrasted with the immortality that comes from eating the bread from heaven. The flesh of Jesus becomes the life-giving spiritual food as it takes away the human experiences of hungering and thirsting, thus signifying eternal life.
In his claims, Jesus reveals that he is the window to the Father and eternal life.
Let us pray that through our encounter with Jesus, we may have God experience and inherit eternal life.
