Acts 2:14, 22-33; Mt 28:8-15
Today’s Gospel highlights the two paths of truth.
The Path of Women: The women who come to Jesus’ tomb at dawn leave it with mixed emotions. The Gospel describes that they were ‘afraid yet filled with joy.’ Why is it so? They have witnessed the empty tomb for themselves. They have listened to the angel’s message. Suddenly Jesus also appears to them. And from the Risen Lord, they carry the mandate to proclaim his resurrection. Women teach us to approach truth with trust and courage. They do not bow down to external pressure and close their eyes to what their eyes have witnessed. Hence, we understand that their acceptance of resurrection proceeds from an internal conviction. They fearlessly announce the truth that they witnessed for themselves.
The Path of Authorities: In total contrast to the testimony of women, the authorities want to hide the truth of Christ’s resurrection by any means. This is where money enters the scene. Earlier, they paid money to Judas to betray Jesus. Now they pay the soldiers ‘a large sum of money’ to distort the truth of Christ’s resurrection. ‘Repeat a lie often enough, and it becomes the truth’ was the law of propaganda for the Nazi Goebbels. Now the propaganda of religious leaders meets the power of money to silence the truth. However, the truth comes alive in the person of Christ. Their methods of coercion and deception fail in the face of Christ, the Truth. Christ is risen, and the truth cannot be shut.
Which path do we follow in order to get to the truth of Christ and his resurrection?
Let us pray that we may be inspired by the truth of Christ’s resurrection to become its fearless testimonies.
