Acts 3:1-10; Lk 24:13-35
Today’s Gospel highlights the need for Jesus’ continuing presence amid his disciples to strengthen them in faith and prepare them for mission.
The conversation between the disciples on the road to Emmaus highlights that even his own disciples have not properly understood the Messiah and the nature of his mission.
While the challenge of understanding the identity of the Messiah remains, they have difficulty in understanding his resurrection too.
This is why they are unable to translate the reality of the empty tomb as signifying Christ’s resurrection, though he foretold it many times.
When the evening falls, the disciples on the road to Emmaus invite Jesus to stay with them.
While they may have extended their hospitality to Jesus, their invitation looks very symbolic in that they still need Christ’s presence to strengthen their faith and prepare them for mission.
Their ‘slowness of heart’ indicates that their formation is incomplete, and it requires Jesus’ intervention through his post-resurrection appearances.
Faith and reason must go hand in hand in a way that one complements the other.
Let us pray that our faith in the Lord, informed by reason, may grow ever stronger.
