Busy Living!

2 Tm 1:1-3,6-12; Mk 12:18-27

Today’s Gospel discusses a doctrinal question from the Sadducees.

Jesus offers correctives in two ways.

The question on life after resurrection comes from the Sadducees, who do not believe in resurrection.

Moreover, by saying that ‘Moses wrote to us,’ the Sadducees are testing Jesus through a hypothetical problem if he would teach anything against the Mosaic Law.

But Jesus’ corrective not only establishes the doctrine of resurrection but also points out their error by showing that the reason the Sadducees do not believe in the resurrection is that they do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.

Secondly, Jesus underlines the fact that God is the God of the living and not of the dead. Here, Jesus reminds them that God revealed Himself to Moses in the words of ‘I AM,’ which is an affirmation of eternal life, and spoke of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as living though they were dead.

In a way, we find Jesus telling them to ‘get busy living,’

On its own, intellectual curiosity is superficial if it does not guide one’s life path.

According to Jesus, everlasting life will be the reward of a worthy living on earth.
