Hg 1: 1-8; Lk 9:7-9

Today’s gospel demonstrates Herod’s confusion about Jesus.

Herod has been keenly following the ministry and fame of Jesus. He keeps track of all that happens in Jesus’ proclamation of the Kingdom.

When some people refer to Jesus as John, from what he did to the latter, he assures himself that it is not John the Baptist.

Herod appears certain about who Jesus is not. That is why references to Elijah or other prophets fail to convince him. It is to know who Jesus is, Herod wants to see him.

This curiosity of Herod captures our attention.

His search for Jesus looks very ideal. However, the problem comes when his search ceases to be a mere remorseless, intellectual curiosity that seeks Jesus for the wrong reasons.

Sometimes, curiosity may be a good starting point. But if it does not mature into conviction, it ends as a futile exercise of amassing information on Jesus.

Imitating Jesus requires conviction, not curiosity. Commitment in mission is only born out of convictions.
