Acts 16:11-15; Jn 15:26-16:4
Today’s Gospel alerts us to what Christians might expect when we testify to Jesus.
The challenge with the testimony to Christ is that it will be opposed tooth and nail.
How prepared are we to deal with such opposition?
When Jesus talks about the Spirit of Truth, we understand that we will not be left alone in our struggles. The Spirit will be present with us as our inner strength and guide, prodding us ever to testify to Jesus courageously.
It is interesting to note the word ‘advocate,’ which is the equivalent of today’s defense lawyer.
The Spirit will defend us in our battles for Christ.
Assuring us of the sure help of the Advocate, Jesus prepares us for what to expect.
In essence, Jesus is asking, ‘How comfortable are we to bear witness to the name of Christ?’
If Christian life requires a life-long testimony, how prepared are we to take up the challenge?
When alienation is the price of our witnessing to Christ, how ready are we to accept the truth?
Through his words, Jesus means that following him comes with a heavy price.
Can we be the unwavering witnesses that Jesus expects to find?
