Dn 13:1-9,15-17,19-30,33-62; Jn 8:1-11
Today’s Gospel highlights Jesus as God’s Mercy in person!
Of this Gospel, St. Augustine wrote: ‘Two were left: misery and mercy!’
The mob came together to condemn the woman and, by extension, Jesus himself.
Their intention was not to safeguard the Mosaic law but instead to use it against the helpless.
It is at this point that Jesus intervenes to turn the question very personal: ‘Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.’
Through his statement, Jesus is refining our perception of God.
God is not a judge. If God were to be a judge, who among us could be saved?
God is our savior, and therefore, God’s merciful encounter with us leads to forgiveness.
Pope Francis put it powerfully: ‘The name of God is Mercy!’
Let us proclaim the Gospel of Mercy that Jesus has shown us.
‘Merciful God’ was the content of Jesus’ proclamation, and he invites us to evangelize the same.
