1 Jn 2:22-28; Jn 1:19-28
The question of John’s identity in today’s Gospel can be explained through two clarifications.
Who John is not: John the Baptist is very clear about who he is not by answering in the negative three times. He is an example of how ‘Knowing who we are not’ helps us focus better on who we are and what we are called to do.
Who John really is: John looks very clear and convinced about his identity. He affirms it twice by commenting on his role as the Messiah’s forerunner and as his unworthy servant.
The beauty of John’s realization lies in the fact that he defines his identity in relation to Jesus. This is why he is able to acknowledge the truth about Jesus and think less of himself.
When we put things into perspective in relation to Jesus, the identity realization will enhance our mission, just as we witness it in John the Baptist.
