The Weakness of God!

Jer 7:1-11; Mt 13:24-30

Today’s Gospel offers an example of God’s protective care and patience.

God protects the good (symbolized by the good seed). God is patient toward the bad (represented by the weeds).

Jesus lets us understand that it is the content of our hearts that makes us good or bad.

However, there is so much misunderstanding about God’s patience.

When good people suffer, we assume God is indifferent toward them. Sometimes, when the bad thrive, we assume they have God’s license.

Both positions are wrong.

On the contrary, as the Gospel shows, God acknowledges the near impossibility of gathering the weeds without at the same time destroying some of the wheat because the weeds and the wheat looked alike.

Here, one finds the excessive care God gives to protecting the good.

From Jesus’ explanation, we understand that God does not use His power only to punish. Instead, the real power of God lies in His patience for the bad to repent.

Hence, the magnanimity of God should not be turned into a license.

There will certainly be a time for God’s judgment. Therefore, the good are invited to persevere in their goodness, while the bad should strive to repent and be good.

God’s only weakness is His patience.

Let us pray that we may strive to be good, never exploiting God’s patience.
