Am 2:6-10,13-16; Mt 8:18-22
Today’s Gospel highlights the fitness for discipleship.
It is interesting to note the two different responses of Jesus to the request for discipleship.
Jesus discourages a scribe from following him when he notices in him a certain forwardness that disregards the challenges of discipleship. The contrast that Jesus offers cautions the scribe about following him, who does not even have the luxuries that correspond to those enjoyed by beasts and birds.
On the contrary, when Jesus notices a certain backwardness in one of his disciples, he encourages him. Though Jesus respects the duty of a responsible son to bury his father, following him admits no postponement. Jesus recognizes the conflict in his disciple. But he also shows him that discipleship is a top priority.
We make an informed decision to follow Jesus.
The deliberate decision to follow Jesus admits no turning back.
