Rom 5:12, 15b, 17-19, 20b-21; Lk 12:35-38
Today’s Gospel highlights the privilege of vigilant servants.
Who are those vigilant servants in Jesus’ view?
The vigilant servants are those dressed for action, with lamps lit and eyes watching the doorway. In other words, they are alert, ready, and waiting for their master’s return.
Jesus turns the attitude and disposition of the vigilant servants into a lesson for his disciples.
1. The vigilant servants show great willingness and intention to serve their master. This is why their waiting for their master is not passive but active and purposeful. With no hard feelings against their master, the servants eagerly await the return of their master.
2. The vigilant servants reorder their priorities when they realize their identity. It is good to know that they act from the mind of their master and not according to their personal whims. This is what earns the praise of their master.
3. The vigilant servants do not dread their master’s return, but they long for it because they are faithful to him, not out of fear but out of loyal love. Since they learn to love what their master loves, the homecoming of their master is a cause of joy for them.
What is the reward of such faithfulness on the part of the vigilant servants?
Jesus shows that the servants who are found ready are not the ones who serve but are themselves served. This reminds us of what Jesus did on the night of the Last Supper.
Let us pray that we may be the vigilant servants that Jesus wishes us to be.
