Rom 6:12-18; Lk 12:39-48
By throwing light on complacency, today’s Gospel invites us to be faithful and prudent servants.
In the Gospel, Jesus shows that when the danger of complacency creeps in, it manifests itself through improper dispositions and behaviours in the life of a steward.
1. When we are complacent, we begin to convince ourselves that even what is sure to happen will not happen. Though the master’s return was assured, the irresponsible servant began to tell himself that the master would be delayed indefinitely.
2. Another danger of complacency is that we begin to live our lives as if accountability does not matter at all. This is what we witness in the behaviour of the irresponsible steward who misuses authority, indulges the flesh, and forgets his mission of being a faithful steward.
3. Yet another danger of complacency is that we begin to forget that we have been called to greatness by God. When we are satisfied with mediocrity, we refuse to use our gifts and talents for the greater glory of God. The irresponsible servant forgets his call to responsible management of God’s household.
In sum, through his instruction, Jesus invites us to reexamine our lives as his disciples.
Shunning the temptation of complacency, we are called to conduct our lives with intentionality and purposefulness.
A purpose-driven life is the mark of a faithful and prudent servant.
Let us pray that we may embrace the call of stewardship and nurture it through our faithfulness and prudence.
