Is 29: 17-24; Mt 9: 27-31
Today’s Gospel highlights the faith and goodness of the two blind men Jesus healed.
At first, we find them full of faith in Jesus.
Their faith in Jesus is revealed in two assertions. They follow Jesus, crying out his divine identity: ‘Son of David, have pity on us!’ They answer ‘Yes, Lord,’ when Jesus asks them if they believe he could do this.
The healing comes as a reward of their faith because Jesus tells them, ‘Let it be done for you according to your faith.’
Secondly, we find them full of goodness.
The two of them reveal their gratitude for Jesus by ‘gladly defying’ his order not to make known the healing to anyone. In my view, they disobey Jesus for three reasons.
1. They defy Jesus only to proclaim his goodness. Their good intention justifies their disobedience.
2. They defy him lest they become ingrates by such obedience. They want to be grateful.
3. They defy him, believing that anything good must be proclaimed and known to others so that others, like them, will become beneficiaries of Jesus’ divine intervention.
In all these, they have been very consistent about proclaiming the goodness and greatness of Jesus.
Hence, in this instance, their act of disobedience symbolizes their profound love and gratitude for Jesus.
Let us pray that our lives may become a testament to our faith and goodness.
