Acts 16: 11-15; Jn 15: 26-16: 4a

Today’s Gospel highlights the importance of Christian testimony.

When Jesus prepares his disciples for the life to come after his departure, he refers to the presence of the Holy Spirit, who will continue his mission in his absence.

Here, what we must note is that the Spirit of Truth proceeds from the Father and is sent by Christ to testify in his favor. As the verse points to the Trinitarian relationship, it focuses on the Spirit’s aid in facilitating our testimony to Christ.

Thus, when Jesus underlines the Holy Spirit’s testimony, he invites his disciples to follow the example by saying, ‘You also testify.’ In other words, Jesus emphasizes that we cannot be passive recipients of Divine revelation but must offer courageous testimony to his name.

However, such witnessing will not be a cakewalk for Christ’s followers. Jesus warns them that his enemies will claim Christian lives as a trophy. Hence, being active witnesses to Christ requires greater faith, enormous patience, and undying perseverance.

It is when our faith is put to the test that we can realize the importance of the Spirit’s work in us. Being faithful to Christ cannot happen without being open to the inbreaking and transforming presence of the Spirit in us.

Let us pray that we may be transformed by the Spirit of Truth to offer faithful testimony to Christ.
