The Life of Sorrow Which Jesus Led from His Birth!

Christmas Novena – Day 5

Wednesday, December 20, 2023

Sorrow was a never-ending feeling in Jesus’ life.

As we read in prophet Isaiah, Our Savior was a ‘man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief’ (Is 53:3).

Paul put it beautifully when he said, Our Savior truly is ‘touched with the feeling of our infirmities’ (Heb 4:15).

It is good to remember that his sorrow was not over the misfortunes around his birth. It was not about the lowliness or poverty that he chose to embrace in his life.

Rather, it was about God’s people and their misery. He cared for every soul, and one could witness in his tears his sympathy, compassion, and grief for others.

Hence, his sorrow was not selfishly individual but profoundly communitarian.

Every step he took toward the cross was shaped by the conviction that only his sacrifice on the cross could set things right in people’s lives.

There is a saying: ‘There are things that can be seen only with eyes that have cried.’

That is why Jesus could care, empathize, and weep.

A baby cries because it has a need. The Holy Infant cries because He cares! Come, let us adore Him!
