1 Jn 3:7-10; Jn 1:35-42
In today’s Gospel, John identifies Jesus as ‘the Lamb of God.’
When John wants to send his disciples to Jesus, he introduces Jesus with his real identity.
In pointing to Jesus, John understands himself as the ‘signpost’ that leads to Jesus.
Jesus accepts John’s recommendation and embraces John’s disciples as his own.
The ‘call episode’ looks like a team ministry that has its beginning with John and ends with Jesus.
The passage helps us reflect on the characteristics of the Lamb of God.
The ‘Lamb of God’ manifests his grace when he asks John’s disciples, ‘What are you seeking?’ The question is characteristic of Jesus, who knows our inner longings. The merciful God finds us the moment we begin to look for Him.
Jesus reveals his ‘mission of grace’ when he takes the initiative to invite John’s disciples to ‘come and see.’ Jesus provides an opportunity to find what we truly seek. The disciples of John find their new teacher (They call him ‘Rabbi’) and find their new home.
We find God’s grace at work in the Lamb. The life that we have is the result of Jesus’ selfless act at Calvary. We witness the generosity of God’s grace as it unfolds on the cross.
John has shown us the Lamb of God. Let us follow Him just as his disciples did.
