1 Sm 16:1-13; Mk 2:23-28

Today’s Gospel helps us understand the height of legalism and gives us a sense of what Jesus was fighting against in his life.

If what people do to satisfy their hunger is against the law, as per the explanations of the Pharisees, we can understand how legalistic they sounded in their teachings and regulating the societal practices in accordance with their teachings.

What we witness in today’s Gospel is therefore a battle between the ‘excessive legalism’ of the Pharisees and the ‘benevolent humanism’ of Jesus.

Legalism, at its height, overlooks humanity and begins to believe in and promote what is contra to humanity.

The Gospel, in its originality, glorifies God through authentic human flourishing because Jesus came to give us life and life in abundance (Jn 10:10).

In our ministry, let the Gospel express itself through giving and ensuring life.
