Gen 46:1-7, 28-30; Mt 10:16-23

Today’s Gospel highlights Jesus’ honest warning regarding our discipleship.

If we closely read the text, we may understand that Jesus does not sugarcoat the cost of discipleship. Nor does he intend that his promises about discipleship be manipulative. He certainly does not do discipleship marketing by only highlighting the positive side more than the negative one.

Instead, Jesus offers some profound insights on discipleship.

1. Discipleship is founded on speaking the truth to a world that resists it. Jesus’ name stands for truth and authority. The moral superiority that comes with uttering Jesus’ name demands allegiance. This is why the apostles were warned not to speak in Jesus’ name again (Acts 4:17). Do we compromise with speaking the truth because it provokes resistance?

2. Jesus’ instruction on enduring the suffering for the sake of his name is an earnest call for fidelity in discipleship. In other words, discipleship is maintaining conformity with the Master who suffered for truth. Indeed! Suffering is communion with Jesus. I have read that ‘We suffer our way to growth.’ Are we truthful to Jesus in our suffering?

3. Jesus promises Divine Providence and guidance of the Spirit in our moments of persecution. He wants us to rest assured that God will not abandon us when we are not ashamed of the name of Jesus Christ and when we consider endurance of suffering as a form of witness to his name. Can we rely on the Spirit-infused strength to honor the name of Jesus?

Let us pray that we may place ourselves under Jesus’ Lordship, always invoking his Name!

  1. I do agree with all of the ideas you have presented in your post. They are very convincing and will certainly work. Still, the posts are too short for newbies. Could you please extend them a little from next time? Thanks for the post.
