Phil 1: 8b-26; Lk 14: 1, 7-11

Today’s Gospel invites us to master the spirituality of self-effacement.

When Jesus finds guests choosing places of honor at the banquet, he directs the parable to them, inviting them to master the spirituality of self-effacement.

For Jesus, radical humility precedes an attitude of self-effacement. Jesus also highlights the voluntary nature of this attitude because he says, ‘When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, go and take the lowest place.’ Here, Jesus does not indicate a helpless acceptance of the lowest place but an intentional decision to settle for it. In Jesus’ view, the attitude reflects inner spiritual strength, not an inferiority complex.

Oftentimes, we associate renunciation with material possessions. Here, Jesus purifies our vision. Accordingly, by voluntarily choosing the lowest place, we renounce any feeling of entitlement. Such renunciation is not imposed from outside. On the contrary, the decision emerges from within, freeing us from the constant demands of the ego. However, we must note that it does not mean that we deny our dignity or allow others to exploit us.

What spiritual benefit does such renunciation and self-effacement bring? It helps us overcome a natural inclination toward self-importance. In proposing self-effacement as a virtue, Jesus helps us discover that true humility is not about thinking less of ourselves, but about being less preoccupied with ourselves. When we are free from a craving for applause, we desert any temptations to self-promotion and busy ourselves with working for God’s glory.

Let us pray for a heart that is pleased to serve the Lord with no expectation of human recognition.
