2 Tim 3:10-17; Mk 12: 35-37

Today’s Gospel presents us with the opportunity to see Jesus rightly as the Lord.

In the text, Jesus is addressing the teaching of the scribes regarding his identity as the Son of David. Here, Jesus is questioning how religious leaders can refer to the Messiah merely as the ‘Son of David,’ when David himself, inspired by the Holy Spirit, called the Messiah ‘Lord.’

Here, Jesus is defending the Divine identity of the Messiah, which the scribes often failed to highlight. By challenging their teaching, Jesus establishes the divine identity and the spiritual authority of the Messiah. Thus, Jesus invites our attention to the fact that the Messiah is more than a man of divine origin.

Mark describes that people listened to Jesus with delight thanks to the corrective he offered on the identity of the Messiah as the anointed one of God. In his clarity on the subject, Jesus outsmarted the religious teachers of his time, and this is what enlightens the crowd. Along with the crowd, we are called to live out the truth we are impressed by.

Let us pray that our understanding of the Messiah enables us to become his living witnesses on earth.
