Blessedness of Vigilance!

Rom 5:12, 17-19, 20-21; Lk 12:35-38

In today’s gospel, Jesus teaches us about the blessedness of vigilance!

‘Girding the waist and lighting the lamps’ signify the alertness of the watchful servants.

In Jesus’ opinion, such watchfulness will not go without its due reward. It will be both ‘recognized and returned’ in kind. Hence, it is not just one-sided, though the duty to be vigilant begins with the servants before it could compel the Master’s response by reversing his role to wait on his faithful servants.

The ‘role reversal’ is both a gift and motivation. Such assurance helps us retain our focus on the return of the Master.

However, there is something more to watchfulness.

C.S. Lewis, the British theologian, once said, ‘Integrity is doing the right thing even when no one is watching.’

Hence, watchfulness is more about our integrity, which precedes the return of the Master (in his absence, to be precise) and concludes with his return, to find the servants faithful, sincere, and watchful.

Watchfulness, adorned with integrity, is its blessing and reward!
