Ex 32:7-14; Jn 5:31-47
Today’s Gospel highlights Jesus’ disappointment with the Jews over their rejection of him!
Jesus’ pain represents what good people always suffer.
Jesus is only wondering what prevents the Jews from accepting him, even though there are many obvious witnesses to his case: John the Baptist, God the Father, the Scriptures, and Moses!
Besides all these, Jesus’ own mission and works testify to his identity.
However, the Jews do not believe in him.
But they would readily believe an imposter who claimed to be the Messiah!
Jesus’ statement underlines at least two big dangers that, at times, lurk behind our spirituality.
Sometimes, rather than believing in God, what we believe is the idea that we have of God.
Likewise, we believe others if only they resonate with our ideas and not necessarily because they represent truth.
Jesus is battling with Jews, who seem to be characterized by such dangerous conceptions of God and God’s representative.
The real search for God culminates in God taking charge of our lives to change them for the better.
It is a life lived from God’s perspective, not viewing God through our prism.
A true spiritual journey avoids these dangers and discovers God for who God truly is!
