God vs. The Idea!

Wis 2:1, 12-22; Jn 7:1-2,25-30

In today’s Gospel, we find Jesus continuing the battle over his identity.

The Jews thought they knew God. And they were sure of their knowledge.

As God’s chosen people, their knowledge and sureness of God were beyond question.

For instance, they believed that the birthplace of the Messiah could not be known, whereas they knew where Jesus came from. This forms their justification for not believing in Jesus.

When God does not fit in with their ideas, they reject God.

Jesus is disappointed that, in their obsession with the ‘idea of God,’ they even reject God.

Sometimes, we want to contain God within our narrow minds and reject God’s manifestations.

This is the danger that Jesus is fighting in the Gospel.

The God whom we relate to should be our guiding light, not some abstract notions or ideas.
