Ezr 1:1-6; Lk 8: 16-18

Today’s gospel highlights Christian responsibility through the imagery of light.

In Matthew 5:14, Jesus says, ‘You are the light of the world.’ It is good to note that Jesus does not say ‘you must be the light’ or ‘you have the light.’ The indication is very clear: YOU ARE.

It is the property of the light to shine. If Jesus means we ‘are’ the light, then we have the duty to make ourselves visible through our deeds which will proclaim our Christian identity.

On a note of caution, it is good to remember that it is not for our glory that visibility is sought. But from the way we let our light shine before others, they will see our goodness and glorify God for them (Mt 5:16).

Our imitation of Christ in love, poverty of spirit, meekness, humility, obedience, compassion, forgiveness, and mercy will manifest our inner guiding light. In this way, who we are will help others understand who we follow!

No wonder Maya Angelou wrote, ‘Nothing can dim the light that shines from within.’
