Is 7:10-14; Lk 1:26-38
Today’s Gospel highlights that Christmas is about reflecting Jesus, who resides in us.
Though it is a passage on the Annunciation, Mary’s act that follows the narrative explains the intrinsic meaning of the text.
When the angel leaves her, Mary rushes ‘in haste’ to meet with her cousin, intuiting the needs of her elderly cousin and lending her a helping hand.
In moving out of her comfort zone to discover those in need, Mary exemplifies what happens when we bear Jesus in us.
Mary’s spontaneous act of benevolence towards her cousin demonstrates that Jesus’ presence in us always triggers our movement toward others.
As a result, it is impossible for us to bear Jesus and remain inactive. On the contrary, as we witness in the life of Mary, the effect of carrying Jesus in us manifests itself in transformative praxis.
The virtuous nature of Mary helps us realize that Christmas is an invitation to bear Jesus in our being so we can replicate her goodness and benevolence in our lives.
Inspired by Mary’s example, let us pray that we may reflect the indwelling presence of Jesus in our words and deeds.
