Jesus, the Newness!

Am 9:11-15; Mt 9:14-17

In today’s Gospel, Jesus invites us to be open to newness and change.

When John’s disciples approach him with a question on fasting, Jesus demonstrates the difference between him and John and invites them to accept the change he symbolizes.

Here, while Jesus acknowledges the preparatory work of John, he shows the need to move beyond his legacy.

The different standpoint of Jesus regarding fasting through the examples of the bridegroom and the wineskins highlights the uniqueness that Jesus brings about.

Jesus portrays himself to be the new wine, which requires a new wineskin.

And the proof of the wineskin is in the way it preserves the wine it contains inside.

Therefore, accepting Jesus, the newness, requires that we become fresh wineskins of newer quality and character.
