Jas 5:9-12; Mk 10:1-12
In today’s Gospel, Jesus explains the difference between God’s Will and the law on divorce.
When the Pharisees test Jesus on the question of divorce, Jesus offers the corrective.
Jesus explains that God intended marriage as a relationship born of commitment, while human custom sought to reduce the holy alliance to an arrangement based on convenience.
Through his explanation, Jesus reclaims the intention of God and upholds it in stronger terms by saying, ‘What God has joined together, no human being must separate.’
In establishing marriage as a permanent union, Jesus does not overlook the complexities involved but only insists on the permanence of love that should characterize the coming together of a man and woman to be united in the presence of God.
Thus, Jesus’ corrective defeats the flawed argument of the Pharisees.
Protecting and upholding the sanctity of marriage is reclaiming God’s Will for humanity.
