Acts 22: 30; 23:6-11; Jn 17:20-26
Today’s Gospel continues Jesus’ prayer.
After praying for his disciples, Jesus now prays for those who will become Christians on account of the disciples’ evangelization.
The passage shows the confidence of Jesus’ vision. We have two points for our reflection.
The Future Church: Jesus knew beforehand that the disciples would carry the Good News to the ends of the earth. All the newcomers will be baptized in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Hence, Jesus is praying for the union of the future Church following the example of his own relationship with the Father.
Disciples as God’s Gift: Secondly, Jesus considers the future believing community as ‘God’s own gift.’ This is how everyone who believes in Jesus is embraced. This is how Christian faith blooms into a beautiful relationship. We are called by God not to discourse or debate but to love and relate. Christianity is relationship itself.
How far have we inherited the idea of Jesus’ vision and actualized it?
