Having Faith Means…!

Nm 21: 4-9; Jn 8: 21-30

Today’s Gospel highlights a deeper understanding of faith.

We realize that there are at least three dimensions that explain what it means to have faith.

1. To have faith is to seek life. Jesus repeats that if people do not believe in him, they will die in sin. In other words, disbelief is not without its consequences. It leads to spiritual death. Instead, faith is a movement towards life. Hence, when we have faith in Jesus, it leads us to a life in its fulness that comes from God. Faith empowers us to actively seek life in abundance.

2. To have faith is to seek what is above. Jesus makes it clear that he does not belong to this world. Hence, when we have faith in him, we also belong to the world from where he comes. Thus, faith is an elevating and soul-lifting experience. Armed with faith, we seek the things of heaven. Faith in Jesus helps us abandon the mindset of the ‘earthly people’ and empowers us to live with a higher purpose.

3. To have faith is to align our will with Jesus and his mission. Jesus claims that ‘I do nothing on my own; I always do what is pleasing to Him.’ Jesus’ statement underlines that when we have faith in him, we not only resonate with him and his mission but also align ourselves with God’s will. Hence, to have faith is to allow God to shape our lives. This is why faith becomes a deeper union with Jesus, and through him, with God, our Father in heaven.

Let us pray that we may find our life, purpose, and communion with God through our faith in Jesus.
