Agents of the Kingdom!

Jer 13: 1-11; Mt 13: 31-35

Today’s Gospel highlights the agential roles of those who have received the responsibility of announcing the Kingdom of God. 

Though it seems that Jesus focuses on the nature of God’s Kingdom through the images of mustard seed and yeast, what is often forgotten is the emphasis that Jesus gives to the agential roles of those who announce God’s Kingdom. How does Jesus indicate it in the parables?

In the Parable of the Mustard Seed, it is a sower who takes the mustard seed and sows it in the field. In the second, it is a woman who takes the yeast and mixes it with three measures of wheat flour. In both, Jesus underlines the involvement of human agents. 

The seed does not sow itself; nor does the yeast mix itself with the flour. If not for the generous and intentional willingness of some human agents, neither would have realized their hidden potential. Without the sower, the seed would have merely remained a seed. Without the woman’s action, the yeast would have only remained inactive. What Jesus helps us realize is that the Kingdom of God unfolds through human cooperation. 

While Jesus stressed human cooperation in the Kingdom’s realization, he showed himself to be the perfect embodiment of this truth. Jesus became the practitioner of the Kingdom par excellence. He did not merely announce God’s Kingdom but lived it in a way that others understood such a visible expression.

Just as the human agents who ‘took’ mustard seed and yeast to help them find their potential, Jesus ‘took’ the Kingdom of God and gave it flesh through his person and ministry. He became the living sign of God’s reign. He embodied it. That is why his words carried an unperceived authority.

Now, the mission of taking God’s Kingdom into the world falls on us. Christians, as responsible agents of God’s Kingdom, should take it and place it where it can bear abundant fruit and transform lives. 

God has chosen not to spread His Kingdom without us. Hence, we are invited to become collaborators in His saving work. 

Let us pray that we may realize our calling to be the agents of God’s Kingdom.
