Spiritual Blind Spots!

1 Cor 9: 16-19, 22b-27; Lk 6: 39-42

Today’s Gospel invites us to be aware of our spiritual blind spots. 

The guiding question for Jesus’ preaching is, ‘Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will not both fall into a pit?’

When Jesus continues his preaching, he makes us ask why we should not judge others. While it is human to believe that we should refrain from judging others because we do not know or understand the circumstances that others are going through, Jesus gives us a more profound reason. 

In Jesus’ view, we should not judge others because we cannot see as God sees. Only God can read human hearts. Only God knows the entirety of a person. It is because we lack the perspective of God, we should be rather slow to judge or condemn others. On the contrary, our inability and imperfections should lead us to humility. 

The false superiority that we often reel under comes from the belief that we are superior to others. When pride becomes the log in our eyes, it results in our spiritual blindness. Those who are too self-righteous tend to forget that we ourselves are on our way to progress in moral life. In other words, it is the spiritual blind spots that make us look down on others.

How can we salvage the situation? It is by letting Christ become our eyes. When Christ becomes our eyes, we will have his view of love, compassion, forgiveness, and understanding. The eyes of Christ enable us to see others with love. Only then will we understand that we were blind in ways we did not even recognize. 

Only Christ can offer us the corrective vision because he is our clear vision. 

Let us pray for grace to look at others with the eyes of God.
