Seeds and Challenges!

Jer 3: 14-17; Mt 13: 18-23

Today’s Gospel invites us to examine the kind of environment we are living in with the firm realization that the seed is always good, and the actual difference lies in the soil.

In the Parable of the Sower, Jesus helps us realize that what inhibits the growth and transformation of the seeds are their environments: hardened path, rocky ground, and thorny soil. Only good soil ensures their growth and yield. 

Hence, Jesus directs our reflection towards our placement in life. Just like the seeds, our problems will persist if we find ourselves in the wrong place. It is very unfortunate that God-given potentials are limited by the wrong environment in which we find ourselves. 

It is because the right environment ensures our transformation, growth, and yield, finding ourselves in the right place matters. Thus, the people we associate with, the habits we cultivate, and the values we embrace also reflect the atmosphere we choose to reside in.

For this reason, we are called to reflect on the possibility of avoiding the wrong soil and finding the right one. To this end, we are directed to ask what effort we are willing to make to let the change happen in us. The problems inherent in every other type of soil and the advantages of good soil should awaken us to the need for the right environment. 

The realization matches with the quote attributed to G.B. Shaw: ‘Show me your friends and I will tell you who you are.’ Hence, a movement from an unhelpful setting to an atmosphere that encourages our flourishing is not only desirable but also inevitable.

Jesus wants us to realize that the love of staying stuck in one place, though often it continues to be unhelpful, will cost us dearly because it prevents us from taking root and bearing abundant fruit. 

Good soil does not happen by accident. It is cultivated. 

Let us pray that we may cultivate the good soil in us with a view to bearing fruit.
