The Meaning of Rejecting Jesus!

1 Cor 2: 1-5; Lk 4: 16-30

Today’s Gospel highlights Jesus being rejected in his hometown.

In rejecting Jesus, the people of Nazareth – God’s people – reject God Himself. 

Here, they seem oblivious to some important truths.

1. God’s searching love for His people is not to be interpreted in terms of weakness. In fact, God reveals His goodness and strength by standing for His people. But God’s people seem to forget this truth. When Jesus comes carrying God’s love, their familiarity with him becomes an obstacle to their faith in him. It is very unfortunate that when God’s love does not fit their expectations, they reject Him. 

2. In rejecting Jesus, what they seem to forget is that no one has the luxury of rejecting God’s love. The people of Nazareth forget that loving God is not an option for them. This God chose them. He loved them. He turned the nameless crowd into His preferred nation. Hence, loving God is a spiritual necessity for them. In other words, rejecting God means remaining broken and lost. Unfortunately, they choose the latter by rejecting Jesus. 

3. Thirdly, in rejecting Jesus, the people of Nazareth seem to declare their spiritual self-sufficiency. However, they forget that, as God’s people, their glory was only a reflection of God’s glory. The chosen people of God received the covenant, the Law, and the prophets. Their history was filled with God’s mighty deeds. Thus, their greatness was not self-generated, and their identity itself came from God. But they forget this truth as well.

In the behaviour of the people of Nazareth, we find a stern warning for ourselves. We should not take God’s love for granted.

Let us pray that we may find our identity as children of God by embracing Jesus in faith.
