Need for an Honest Encounter!

Is 48:17-19; Mt 11:16-19

Today’s Gospel invites us to honestly encounter the truth.

An encounter with the truth results in transformation.

Nevertheless, we find that people see only what they are prepared to see. In the process, there is a distortion of truth and lies conveniently presented.

The lives of Jesus and John the Baptist symbolized two different mission models. While John’s prophetic ministry embraced an ascetical life, Jesus’ proclamation of the Kingdom showed itself in action. While John lived away from people, transforming their lives as an external agent, Jesus lived with the people, transforming them from within. While John was known for renunciation, Jesus created a culture of equality, inclusion, and acceptance through his table fellowship.

Since the objectives of Jesus and John were different, their approaches also differed. But each of them was effective in its own way.

But, even with the best possible manifestation of two different ideals, people had problems. The problem was not with the mission of either Jesus or John. It was with the vision of the people, and therefore, what needed healing was their vision. If they had accepted Jesus and John for what they each stood for, people would have been transformed. But since what they wanted to see was a reflection of their own selves, there was no possibility for transformation.

Truth is uncomfortable, but more liberating. An honest encounter with the truth will help our conversion. Let us prepare for an honest encounter with the Baby King!
