2 Sm 7:4-17; Mk 4:1-20
The ‘Parable of the Sower’ in today’s Gospel invites us to consider the various responses that we give to the Word, symbolized by seeds falling in different areas of the field.
The Path: What keeps me away from God’s presence? Is it my indifference or ignorance? What can I do to get to the Lord so that my life will be transformed?
Rocky Ground: It symbolizes an initial enthusiasm that fades away gradually. It is not just coming to the Lord that matters, but being with Him without departing from His presence. How can I keep myself in God’s presence without fleeing it?
Thorny Land: Too many competing interests prevent us from following what is essential. How can we reorder our priorities? When can I say, ‘first things first’ and seek God’s Kingdom so that all else will be given to me (Mt 6:33)?
Good Soil: This is the most desirable part of the land. How far am I away from it? If I am in it, what is it that I do to keep myself there so that my yield will never decrease?
Jesus wants us to perform a self-examination to find out where we really are.
The knowledge of ‘where we are’ should lead us to ‘where we should be’!
